Historic dC COOP
This elegant property dates to 1931 and is one of Washington DC’s “Best Addresses,” later renovated by famed decorator Dorothy Draper. The design for this sympathetic renovation of the lobbies and corridors centers on a custom Axminster carpet that incorporates the Moorish elements present throughout the complex, in colors drawn from Draper’s interiors. Thoughtfully chosen upholstery fabrics updated historic sofas and chairs scattered throughout the grand lobbies, which facilitate private conversations and annual holiday parties for the residents.
The work at this coop was done by a committee of volunteer designers, including Susan. Its implementation required the support of a majority of unit owners, and a complex design process that presented multiple design schemes for popular votes.
A selection of upholstery fabrics and a hand-drawn sketch of a the carpet design. It was very important to the coop owners to maintain the historic feel of the lobbies.
